Last days of two-way traffic on Lexington’s Main Street, 1971

In preparation for downtown Lexington’s Main Street going one-way in June 1971, new traffic lights were installed and lane markings were being removed in front of Stewart’s Dry Goods store in June, 1971. Main Street was converted to one-way at midnight June 24, coinciding with the opening of a new Vine Street, which also was one-way. The two roads were one-way from Midland Avenue to Spring Street, near what is now Rupp Arena. The last of the downtown train tracks were removed in December 1968, clearing a path for the new Vine Street. On the first day of one-way traffic, patrol officers were stationed at the streets to stop drivers going the wrong way. On the flip side, drivers were generally reluctant when moving in the new one-way traffic and had to be encouraged to speed up. In this image, businesses visible on the left include Embry & Co. clothier, Shackleton’s Music Store and the Strand Theater. On the right side is Stewart’s. Click on the image for a closer look.
