First-year University of Kentucky football coach Hal Mumme and sophomore quarterback Tim Couch watched practice on Aug. 20, 1997, at the Nutter Field House in Lexington. Mumme was announced as UK’s coach on Dec. 2, 1996, and by Christmas he had named the Kentucky native his starting QB.
