University of Kentucky basketball player Pat Riley rested on the bench in the closing minutes as the No. 2 Cats had a 96-83 win over No. 3 Vanderbilt on Jan. 15, 1966, at Memorial Coliseum. Riley and Louise Dampier combined for 52 points in the Cats’ 12th straight victory of the season. UK would finish the year 27-2, No. 1 in the final AP and UPI rankings, but the Cats would lose in the NCAA title game to Texas Western. Riley went on to play in the NBA, where he was a perennial bench player, but he later became regarded as one of the greatest NBA coaches of all time, winning five championships.
