In September 1992, Lexington police rolled out a new look with their 20 new cruisers. The 1992 Ford Crown Victorias had a rounder shape that required a new design, Assistant Chief Larry Ball said. The new markings were designed to increase the cars’ visibility by emphasizing the 911 emergency number and the word “Police.” The new markings were phased in as officers received new patrol cars. At the time, police said designs are changed every eight to 10 years. Published in the Sept. 24, 1992, Lexington Herald-Leader. Click here to see an image from our archives of new cruisers in 1950.
