Shown in February 1978, the old Jefferson Street viaduct was deteriorating, with chunks of concrete falling from the structure. The state determined that the viaduct, built in 1920, and it’s link to Manchester Street would be unsafe for any traffic within two years. The state proposed replacing it with a $3 million viaduct which was started in 1979 and finished in September 1980. This area, behind Rupp Arena, is now know as the Cox Street parking lot.
