Anita Madden at the proposed site of a new regional mall, on Hamburg Place Farm, which was one of the recommendations of the Comprehensive Plan Update Committee in August 1987. The land, 1,364 acres, at Winchester Road and Interstate 75 was one of the sites approved as possible locations for a new regional mall. Hamburg Place eventually got the mall approval, and would use land that was then used for cattle and tobacco to develop into Hamburg Pavilion. Madden, best known as a Lexington socialite, horsewoman and charity fundraiser famous for throwing extravagant Kentucky Derby Eve parties at Hamburg Place Farm, died Thursday at 85.
