Morehead State University quarterback Phil Simms in 1978. Simms was born in Springfield and grew up in Louisville, graduating from Southern High School. At Morehead, he compiled a 9-28 record, but his 5,545 yards and 32 touchdowns caught the eyes of several NFL scouts. He was the New York Giants’ first-round pick in the NFL Draft, the seventh player overall. Simms played his entire professional career with the Giants and was named MVP of Super Bowl XXI, after he led the Giants to a 39-20 victory over the Denver Broncos and set the record for highest completion percentage in a Super Bowl. He went into broadcasting after his playing days and now works for CBS, calling NFL games. Simms will speak at Morehead during graduation ceremonies Saturday, May 9, and will receive a bachelor’s degree in university studies and an honorary doctorate in humane letters.
