Former University of Kentucky basketball coach Joe B. Hall, left, laughs with ex-UCLA basketball coach John Wooden Nov 15, 1991 in Lexington. Wooden was in town for a dinner held by the University of Kentucky’s Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Foundation. The foundation is a volunteer organization of citizens interested in seeking private funding for the UK Sanders-Brown Center on Aging. Opened in 1979, the center is recognized internationally for its research on Alzheimer’s disease. “You people are givers, and giving should give you a great satisfaction,” Wooden told the 700 people attending the fund-raiser. He shared a philosophy he has held since 1934. “You should never try to be better than someone else, but you should try to be your best,” he said.
