University of Kentucky’s Scott Padgett celebrated a three-pointer late in the NCAA South Regional Finals on March 23, 1998, against No. 1 seed Duke. The junior’s go-ahead shot capped a 17-point comeback in the final 9:30 of the game against the Blue Devils, who were undefeated in their last seven regional finals. The 86-84 win sent coach Tubby Smith and the Wildcats to the Final Four, UK’s 13th, where the Cats won their seventh national title. Padgett signed a five-year contract extension with Samford University on Monday, keeping the Louisville native under contract as the Bulldogs’ head coach through the 2021-2022 season.
