Members of Stagehands Local 346 were surrounded by a couple thousand balloons as they filled and tied what would about 6,000 of them on Dec. 30, 1977, at Rupp Arena. It took about eight hours to blow them up and suspend them from the ceiling of the arena, where they were released on New Year’s Eve during an Earth, Wind and Fire concert.
