Kentucky’s Alex Groza, No. 15, jumped for the second-half tip-off against Vanderbilt’s Pete Robinson on Feb. 26, 1949. It was the last home game for Groza, the Wildcats captain and All-American center. It also was the last home game for three other seniors, Wallace (Wah Wah) Jones, Cliff Barker and Ralph Beard, as the Kentuckians completed their regular-season schedule with a 70-37 win over the Commodores. From left: Jones, Beard (12), Dale Barnstable (18) the Commodores’ Billy Joe Adcock (9) and Hank Duvier (3). The identity of the Kentucky player at right is unknown. Groza got the ball to Jones on the tip. A month later, the team would win the school’s second national title. Click here to see another image from our archives of the four seniors from that team.
