A photograph of the entrance to Dixieland Gardens, 110 Luigart Ct., an African American dance hall, where, on February 13, 1943, Sam B. Coppock Jr., a University of Kentucky senior was murdered by Boyd Lakes, a former bus driver. Coppock was in the white spectator’s enclosure at the dance hall when he was shot. Two African American dancers were also injured. Lakes fired four rifle shots into the dance hall to “scare them and try to break up the dance.” Herald-Leader Archive Photo
