Mrs. J. Campbell Thompson, wife of Kentucky’s expert muzzle-loading rifle maker, Dr. J. C. Thompson held one of her husband’s rifles in August 1949. Mrs. Thompson won first prize in a shooting contest at Catlettsburg’s centennial observation the previous week. In the competition that included men, she won first prize shooting at 25, 50 and 100 yards, shooting rifles her husband had made. She started shooting years prior so she would know what her husband was talking about when he discussed muzzle loaders. Herald-Leader Archive Photo
