Secretariat won the Kentucky Derby by 2 1/2-lengths over Sham on May 5, 1973, at Churchill Downs. His time of 1:59.4 remains the record for the fastest Derby ever. In fact, ran each quarter-mile segment was faster than the one before it. Secretariat would go on to win horse racing’s Triple Crown. In November 1973, he arrived at Lexington’s Blue Grass Field to stand at stud at Claiborne Farm in Paris. He remained at Claiborne until his death in 1989 at age 19.
