The flaming wreckage of an Ushers Transport truck came to rest in front of Judy’s Cut n’ Curl Beauty Shop, blocking the only entrance and exit of the shop in downtown Beattyville, on Sept. 24, 1977. The runaway gas tanker’s brakes failed coming down the steep hill on Ky 11 into Beattyville, and it crashed into a block of storefronts. Seven people were killed in the fire as more than 8,000 gallons of gasoline ignited. The bodies were found in Judy’s Cut n’ Curl and Gladys’ Dinette. Photo by Malcolm L. Stallons | Staff
