All these senior students at Oakdale Vocational School, Breathitt County, took their first airplane ride on April 22, 1950 at Blue Grass Field in Lexington. Some fo the students, visiting in Lexington over the weekend, had their doubts about getting into the plane, but C.W. Bohmer, who operated a flying service at the field, convinced them they’d be safe. In the group were G.B. Rhodes, school business manager; Fleta Rhodes, class sponsor; Bobbie Jean Witt, Kona; Ellen Lockard, Oakdale; Sara McGowan, Tullahoma, Tenn.; Ruth Shepherd, Manchester; Eugene Watkins, Athol; Archie Reynolds, Curt, and Bohmer. The school, which had about 100 students, was run by the Free Methodist group. Herald-Leader Archive Photo
