Kentucky shuts down Tim Duncan, 1996
The University of Kentucky’s Antoine Walker and Walter McCarty helped double-team Wake Forest’s Tim Duncan, as Anthony Epps, left, stood by to help during the Cats’ 83-63 win in the NCAA Midwest Regional Finals in Minneapolis on March 23, 1996. Frustrating Duncan consistently with aggressive traps and double teams, UK limited the Wake Forest star to two field goals. So effective was the Cats’ defense that Duncan, a junior, didn’t score a field goal until 12 minutes remained in the contest. “They did a great job on me,” the ACC player of the year said. “They were very aggressive double-teaming and trapping. They probably played me better than anyone has done all year.” Kentucky would go on to win its sixth national title nine days later. New Circle Road construction, 1960
Construction of New Circle Road at Leestown Road, November 1960. A railroad track and Town Branch runs along the bottom of the photo, and the Meadowthorpe neighborhood is at top right. The area in the middle on the right side is now a mix of hotels, stores, townhouses and restaurants including Applebee’s, Zaxby’s and Taco Bell. Further to the right of that is what became the Meadowthorpe Shopping Center, which includes a Kroger store. At far left in the middle is what is now Leestown Middle School. George Wilson of Lexington’s Dunbar High School was part of a group photo of the 1963 All State Tournament team after the state championship game in Louisville on March 17, 1963. Seinfeld look-alike contest, 1998
Fans of the television show Seinfeld showed up in full force May 7, 1998, for Lexington’s look-alike contest at Fayette Mall. 75 people entered the contest, celebrating the popular show’s finale, which aired a week later. The field was narrowed to 12 Elaines, five Jerrys and four Kramers. Only one George showed up. The look-alikes won signed scripts of “The Contest” Seinfeld episode and other gifts. Frome left, Keyth Sokol (Jerry), Willie Davis (Kramer), Brian Staples (George) and Larry Ashlock (Kramer) ckecked-in for the contest. Staples won for George, Ashlock for Kramer, and in the background is Jason Cunningham, who won as Jerry.
