WLEX-18 evening anchors, 1993
WLEX-18 evening anchors Tom Kenny and Mindy Shannon, shortly before Kenny, then 31, was promoted from the morning news beginning Jan. 4, 1993. He was replacing the demoted Jim Bailey. Kenny would be the fourth anchor to sit with Shannon since 1981 — following Bailey, Bob Hale and Mike Barry — at WLEX, which had been No. 2 in the ratings all during that time. Shannon left WLEX in August 1993 to become Gov. Brereton Jones’ press secretary. She currently lives in Lexington. Downtown Georgetown’s Main Street, 1988
Downtown Georgetown in Scott County, looking west down Main Street from the intersection of Hamilton Street, Jan. 4, 1988. The county courthouse is at left. It was the county’s fourth courthouse since Scott County was founded in 1792. The building is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places but is no longer used for for trials. Today it houses county government offices, and the district and circuit courts are on North Hamilton Street, just off Main Street. At the time of this photo, Georgetown’s population was 11,000. First twins born in the United States, 1951
Mrs. Douglas W. McCammish held her twin daughters, the first twins born in the United States in 1951, on Jan. 1, 1951, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington. Playing off its slogan, “Which twin has the Toni?,” The Toni Co., makers of Toni Home Permanent, offered prizes that the Winchester family won. The older twin, Mary, was born at 12:23 a.m. at five pounds, one and one-half ounces. Her sister was born eight minutes later, weighing six pounds, six and one-half ounces. They won $500 in gifts, including cribs, mattresses, a twin baby carriage and associated baby supplies. Herald-Leader File Photo
Stagehands fill balloons for New Year’s Eve, 1977
Members of Stagehands Local 346 were surrounded by a couple thousand balloons as they filled and tied what would about 6,000 of them on Dec. 30, 1977, at Rupp Arena. It took about eight hours to blow them up and suspend them from the ceiling of the arena, where they were released on New Year’s Eve during an Earth, Wind and Fire concert. The $13 million transit center flanked both sides of the Harrison viaduct, now know as Martin Luther King Boulevard.
